Just in case you haven't heard elsewhere, there's a free movie today on the Internet! At roughly 1:40pm CST, the newly restored version of
Metropolis will be showing for the very first time. Thanks to a German print found in Argentina (coff coff) there's over an hour of new footage. It probably won't be in English, but you can get a summary via
Wikipedia. And anyway, it's a silent movie to begin with. What, are you dumber than a bunch of rubes from 1927?
If you're one of those people who think
Metropolis is
just an anime, you owe it to yourself to see this. If you loved
Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" music video or David Fincher's video for
Madonna's "Express Yourself", you owe it to yourself to see this.
Metropolis is hugely influential, and is basically the Lou Reed of the punk rock that is sci-fi. If you've never seen the movie, maybe you should change that today. Get some friends, get some popcorn, order some pizzas, and then head over to
Roger Ebert's website for a choice of links scheduled to go live at about 1:40 CST. Seriously, it's a free movie. What better way to enjoy your snow day, or to beat those Friday watch-the-clock blues?
